[Balances between nitrogen derived from soil and from fertilizers in an alfisol under maize]
1995
Hetier, J.M. | Cardon, D.
Three nitrogen budgets (Total N and derived from fertilizer Nddf) were established at the end of maize cultivations realized on the Kandic Paleustalf of the Botanical Garden of Unellez in Barinas (Western Llanos, Venezuela). The results of these balances and the steady state of the nitrogen reserves of this soil are used to propose an evaluation of losses of Nitrogen derived from the soil (Ndfs) which are not directly medible but have to be linked to Ndff losses. Compensation mecanisms are necessary to explain the steady state of N status. These mechanisms are firstly linked to unavoidable mistakes in the Ndff budget but the most important are mainly to the effect of Panicum maximum growth after corn harvest. The Ndff losses are mainly lateral run-off and internal leaching followed by an early and intense volatilization during the first week after fertilization. Simultaneity of internal translocation from leaves and stem to the grain and active nitrogen absorption are evidenced by Ndff evolution within the plant during cultivation.
