Insertion of a progesterone-impregnated intrauterine device (PRID, Sanofi) is an alternative method of treatment of post-partum anoestrus and ovarian cysts in cows. Its major merit is the independence of the actual stage of the follicular cycle. The dominant follicle grew slowly during the treatment period and ovulation set in around d 3 after the removal of the device. An almost standard induction of ovulation and onset of normal luteal phase can be achieved provided that no luteal structures are present on the ovaries and the cyclic development of follicles in the form of follicular waves is retained.
