A contribution to torrent activity in alpine watersheds

The paper contains results of research on torrent activity in the watershed of an alpine torrent Jamnicky potok in the West Tatras. First, the torrent was evaluated visually within a detailed field survey of the stream and watershed, secondly by calculating the coefficient of watershed torrent activity in the sense of Slovak technical standard STN 736820. Given the extreme hydraulic, hydrologic, climatic, morphologic, erosion and other characteristics of the alpine torrent concerned, the highest value of the coefficient of watershed torrent activity has been determined until now from the results of our research conducted in particular regions of the Slovak Republic since 1994. It is important that the calculated values are in good agreement with data acquired by field surveys.
