Project: Regional political perspectives for women in rural areas - Analysis of the problems and evaluation of the chances for development
1997
Oedl-Wieser, T.
The rapid transformation of the rural way of life - caused and reinforced through the globalization of the economy, the increase in competition in agriculture and the world of work, along with the loss of traditions and the tendencies toward individualization in society - makes obvious the need to confront the issue of development in rural areas in an intensive way. This is especially true in the case of women, who tend to remain in the countryside more frequently than men due to their low level of mobility. This low mobility of rural women reflects their socially mandated primary responsibility to raise and care for their children. This project aims at improving the current situation, which is characterized by a lack of research on women, of rural sociology in Austria. It aims - through the use of a gender perspective - at revealing the patriarchal structures in our society, particularly in rural society, along with making visible the effects of patriarchy on the life conditions of women in rural areas. Given this rigid sex role division, the question arises of what strategies and means women find to overcome the limitations and discriminations. This project, therefore, focuses on the analysis and evaluation of the policies of the European Union and the Austrian government that are intended to promote women in rural areas. Of special importance, also, are examples of women's projects from individual EU countries.
