Group dying of silver fir on Monte Amiata [Tuscany] associated with Heterobasidion annosum

إنجليزي. For a number of years there has been a mass death of adult silver trees on Monte Amiata. Investigations in the area have revealed that Heterobasidion annosum is widespread on the root apparatus and the basal part of the stems of dead trees. All found isolated belonged to the F-group. The advance of the disease has been very rapid. In the period 1989-1994 mortality in the sample area was 19.2%. The sudden death of the trees can be put in relation with the lack of rainfall, expecially in summer, during the last years; the dry conditions seem to have favoured the nearly complete invasion of the stem by the pathogen. It appears that an important role must also be assigned to the characteristics of the soil, which has volcanic origin and is favourable to the growth of both the host tree and the parasite

Le indagini svolte hanno messo in evidenza una notevole diffusione di Heterobasidion annosum sugli apparati radicali e nella parte basale del fusto delle piante morte. Tutti gli isolati raccolti appartengono al gruppo F. La progressione della malattia e' apparsa molto rapida, nelle aree di saggio la motralita' e' risultata del 19.2% nel periodo 1989-94. La morte improvvisa delle piante puo' essere messa in relazione con la carenza di precipitazioni, specialmente nel periodo estivo, degli ultimi anni; questa sembra aver favorito la completa invasione del cilindro legnoso da parte del patogeno. Un ruolo importante pare essere esercitato anche dalle caratteristiche del terreno, di origine vulcanica, favorevole sia alla crescita dell'ospite che allo sviluppo del parassita
