Estimation of selected subsoil properties of Krakow communal waste dump at Barycza in respect of natural seal efficiency

Physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of soil in municipal dumping site at Barycza were studied to evaluate the soil as a layer sealing natural substratum and slopes of the dump. The dusty soil of specific density 2.71 g/cu. cm, bulk density 1.95 g/cu. cm, plasticity index 0.29-0.67 and 18.44-25.58% moisture content, filtration coefficient from 1.37x10*[-3) to 9.96x10*[-8) cm/s, contained clayey minerals, mainly illite, quartz, carbonates, hygroscopic water and a bit of organic matter. Also the content of CaCO3 was stated at pH 6.8-7.2. Examined subsoil was an effective isolating layer for the dump
