The objectives of the Musa genetic improvement program at CRBP are twofold. First of all, the proposed crop improvement concerns pest and disease resistance, with particular focus on black Sigatoka resistance. Secondly, CRBP aims at creating plantain-type hybrids for the local food markets and small western and central African farmers. At present, the CRBP program is mainly concerned with traditional methods of improvement using conventional 3x x 2x hybridization. The medium-term objective is the creation of tetraploid hybrids by crosses between a triploid variety used as female parent, and a wild Musa acuminata or an AA cultivar as male parent. The presence of black Sigatoka allows the study of genetic determinism of resistance. Crosses are already under way between homozygous diploid varieties showing different levels of resistance. Screening for nematode resistance is already in progress. Proposed new breeding programs concern the improvement of different biotechnologies. In the course of this work, CRBP has at its disposal an important Musa collection.
