The conventional breeding of banana concerns the following cultivars: Rasthali (AAB) syn. Silk, Red (AAA), Karpooravalli (ABB) syn. Pisang Awak, and Virupakshi (AAB) syn. Lady Finger. The conventional breeding of plantain and cooking banana types concerns the cultivars Nendran (AAB) syn. French plantain, Monthan (ABB) syn. Bluggoe, and Ney Vannan (ABB). Mutation breeding and other biotechnological approaches are being formulated for the improvement of Musa in India. There is a need to train persons for the improvement of bananas through biotechnological means. A banana collection expedition to northeastern India and the Indo-Burma region could retrieve several wild species and new cultivars.
