Spiral grain in softwoods
1997
Krosl, M. (Trebnje (Slovenia)) | Torelli, N. (Ljubljana Univ. (Slovenia). Biotechnical Fac., Wood Science and Technology Dept.)
Basic patterns of spiral grain in 11 Norway spruces (Picea abies Karst.) and 8 silver firs (Abies alba Mill.) using method of tearing tangential lamellas were studied. Wood immediately adjacent to the pith was straight grained, but left-hand spiral develops very soon and continues to increase during subsequent growth, and generally reaches maximum value within the first decade. Thereafter the grain angle decreases towards zero, and later it changes into the right-hand direction. In adult wood deviations from basic patterns were identified. Left-hand spiral grain in softwoods is considered to be an aspect of juvenility
