Econometrics estimation of the flue-cured tobacco supply function in Zimbabwe (1980-1994)
1996
Musindo, A. (National Economic Planning Commission, Harare (Zimbabwe))
Determinants of tobacco production are of importance to the Zimbabwean economy as it is a major foreign currency earner and provides a liveliwood to a significant percentage of the population. This paper attempts to provide an empirical estimation of the flue-cured tobacco supply in Zimbawe over the period 1980-1994. The paper has been based mainly on reports from the Tobacco Marketing Board and the Tobacco Association as well as other publications from sources that were giving a general analysis of the economy and not tobacco in particular. The writer failed to read on tobacco studies in Zimbabwe and this is a weakness of the paper. Tobacco statistics for Zimbabwe are available from as early as 1910. The crop has been grown on a commercial basis, implying that the farmers kept statistics of their output for taxation and profit calculations. As the crop is legally sold through the Tobacco Marketing Board, all statistics used are considered for this paper as being reliable. The statistics from the Tobacco Marketing Board and the Zimbabwse Tobacco Association are identical.
