It has always been said that, in Malawi, large losses occur in tobacco production during pre-harvest, harvest and post-harvest but none of these has been researched and recorded in the country. It is the absence of this all important data in the country that this study was carried out so as to provide reasonable estimates of the harvest and post-harvest losses. Specifically the study aimed at estimating: losses during harvest and after harvest, at the major handling stages during harvesting and post-harvest activities and total losses per unit area of land cultivated
