Northern border mountains of the Czech Republic, mainly the Jizera Mountains are under the constant stress of air pollution. The paper presents results of the health state observation at 17 samples plots of young spruce stands in the Jizera Mts., situated at the border on Poland. Results from 1993 to 1995 are presented. Air pollutants (sulphur, fluorine and chlorine), characterizing pollution load, have been analyzed in one-year-old needles. The content of malondialdehyde, characterizing oxidative stress, was also determined. The health state was evaluated in percentage of crown defoliation, according to IPC-Forests method, used at ecological monitoring. The results show that air pollution load of plots depends on the exposition to pollution sources, which, in combination with other factors (climate, nutrient deficiency) is manifested by different health state (defoliation rate).
