Firstly, the evolution and structure of the agro-food foreign trade in Tunisia has been examined according to geographical areas (European Union and Arabic Maghreb Union), establishing indicators to measure structural competitiveness in the sector. The analysis covers the 1975-1995 period. Secondly, by using multivariate cointegration techniques, we have tried to determine the factors that have an influence on the competitiveness of the agro-food sector abroad. Not only the specific characteristics of the sector have been considered, but also the most relevant variables of the macroeconomic policy in Tunisia. The sample used in this empirical part covers the 1962-1994 period. The methodology used lies in the specification and estimation of a VAR (autroregressive vector) in an ECM (error correction form). From the estimated model, we have calculated the impulse-response functions and we have studied the interrelationships that exist among the factors derived from the Tunisian macroeconomic policy and those derived from the specific characteristics of the agro-food sector.
