The content of this issue deals with the experimental results of the research project No. 8001-CT91-0307 conducted between October 1991 and September 1996 and funded by the European Commission under the DG VI CAMAR Programme. The objective of the project, which studied barley straw, wheat straw and maize stover, was aimed at: (i) checking the best conditions for the treatment of fibrous feeds with urea as the source of ammonia. (ii) Studying the possibility of upgrading the nutritive value of untreated fibrous feeds simply by taking advantage of the associative effect with the proper source of nitrogen. It was then decided to distribute the different tasks among the five contractants: (i) barley straw was to be studied by the INIA in Madrid; (ii) wheat straw was to be studied by the DISCIZO in Florence and by the EZN in Fonteboa; (iii) maize stover by the SIA in Zaragoza; and (iv) "by-products" by the ISA in Lisbon. Some other feeds have been occasionally studied. Now the five-year time is over, the research work has been completed and the conclusions drawn. The major aspects of this project are dealt with and underlined throughout the contributions of this publication.
