Degradation of cellulose by two mesophilic strains of Clostridium sp. isolated from soil

Two mesophylic, cellulolytic strains of spore forming, anaerobic bacteria were isolated from soil samples collected at Lyczyn. The investigated strains of bacteria produced a complete complex of cellulolytic enzymes: filter paper hydrolyzing enzymes (FP-ase) and beta-endoglucanase (CMC-se). During incubation, the cellulolytic activity and protein content increased in cultural media of the two strains. The following products of cellulose degradation were identified by gas chromatography: aldehydes, propanol, butanol, ethanol, methanol, acetic acid, butyric acid and isovaleric acid
