Studies on influence of clone on rooting ability and rooting quality in the propagation of cuttings from 40- to 350-year- old Taxus baccata L. ortets
1996
Schneck, V.
In 1994 an experiment was started for the vegetative propagation of 54 trees of Taxus baccata L. from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The aim was to investigate the suitability of this method for the conservation of genetic ressources andto determine the influence of clone and sex on the rooting ability and -quality of cuttings. The determination of the influence of age was possible only partially. About 50% of all cuttings developed roots. The clonal differences for rooting ability were high 71.2% of the total variance was caused by clones. No differences for rooting ability between female and male clones were observed. On the other hand the rooting ability was influenced by the age of the ortet but without a clear trend. This observation is discussed in connection with the problem of phase change. The results for the quality of rooting and the number and total length of roots, were similar to that for rooting ability. The differences between cuttings within clones were the main part of the total variance for these traits. This experiment shows the usefulness of vegetative propagation by cuttings for the purpose of conservation of genetic ressources of Taxus baccata L.
