Breeding bird community of Abieti-Fagetum Prealpinum forest near Sentjoski vrh on karst plateau Dobrovlje in Savinja Alps
2000
Vogrin, M. (Orehova vas (Slovenia))
During the 1998 (March-July) breeding bird community of Abieti-Fagetum Prealpinum forest near Sentjoski vrh on the karst plateau Dobrovlje (Savinja Alps) was studied. On the area of 20.8 ha between 980 and 1060 m above sea level, 27 bird species were recorded. 25 of them were recorded to nest. The mean density of birds in the Abieti-Fagetum Prealpinum forest on Dobrovlje, coming to 55.4 pairs/10ha, is an average value for mountain conditions. The species which dominate this community are: Regulus regulus, Fringilla coelebs, Parus ater, Erithacus rubecula, Regulus ignicapillus, Phylloscopus colybita and Turdus merula. The abundance of the community of the birds with respect to their biomass is 3915 g/10ha. For a more detailed analysis the bird community has been split into several ecological groups. The division was based on three categories of characters (TomiaÆoj} et al. 1984): type of food, type of nest-site and migratory habits. The density of the breeding avifauna depended primarily on the density of species which nest in the crowns of trees, from density of omnivorous species and from residents. The number of species found in the forest near Sentjoski vrh approximates to those reported from other forests from Central Europe.
