Slovenian forest gene bank
1999
Kraigher, H. | Zitnik, S. (Slovenian Forestry Inst., Ljubljana (Slovenia))
Slovenian forestry is based on sustainable, co-natural management of multifunctional forests. Forest management and silvicultural measurements depend on the long life-span of forest trees, well adapted to the site conditions, while seeds of a long list of broadleaf tree species are impossible to store for long periods. Therefore the Slovenian forest gene bank is established broaderly than other plant gene banks. It is based on selection and use of seed from selected seed stands. The other parts of the Slovenian forest gene bank are the seed bank, seed orchards and special means for protection, such as living archives and plantations from provenance & progeny trials. The basis for such a gene bank dates from the fifties. Its has its legislative basis as part of the Public Forest Service in the Forest Act (1993) and the Forest Development Programme of Slovenia (1996), coinciding with the internationally established European Programme for Conservation of Forest Genetic Resources (EUFORGEN), which is coordinated by the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) in collaboration with FAO in Rome as the consequence of resolutions of ministerial conferences and Pan-European programme for the protections of forests.
