Liquid carbon dioxide extraction of Taxol and its related compounds from the needles of Taxus cuspidata
1999
Kikuchi, Y. | Kawamura, F.
The needles of Taxus cuspidata have been very strongly recommended as a possible alternative source of taxol, since the needles are regenerative and can be harvested without damaging the forest. The taxol content in the intact plant is quite small. However, taxol has shown activity as an anti-cancer agent (Wani, et al. 1971). While the demand for taxol is steadily increasing, supply of the drug is low. Carbon dioxide is used among the possible solvents for the supercritical fluid extraction of taxol (Hennings, et al. 1992). The present study was concerned with ascertaining the feasibility of low pressure extraction using liquid carbon dioxid or liquid carbon dioxide and methanol mixture as solvents to extract taxol and related compounds from the needles of Taxus cuspidata.
