Basil is not included within the vegetable species regulated by the 70/458 EC directive, nor it is comprised in the Italian regulation, despite its significance in Italy, and particularly in Liguria, the Genova region. So that our country is now planning the introduction of a basil varietal catalogue (not compulsory at the beginning). The paper presents an introduction to the studies that ENSE is carrying out to find out the distinctiveness of varieties and to investigate the characteristics of basil seeds commercialized in Italy. In this way, the first step is the definition of the list of characters for DUS test

[Il basilico non e' inserito fra le specie di ortaggi regolati dalla direttiva CE 70/458, ne' e' compreso nel registro nazionale, nonostante la sua importanza in Italia, in particolare in Liguria, la regione di Genova. Il nostro paese sta quindi studiando l'introduzione del registro varietale per il basilico (all'inizio non obbligatorio). Il lavoro presenta un'introduzione agli studi che l'ENSE sta conducendo per individuare i caratteri distintivi delle varieta' e per indagare sulle caratteristiche delle sementi di basilico commercializzate in Italia.
