Cultural management of tomato yellow leaf curl virus disease of tomato and varietal screening for resistance

Cultural management trials of Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV) disease on tomato were conducted during the rainy season at Yampaphant [475m] and Rising Patan [450m] (Tanahun) in 1996, Yampaphant in 1997 and Kudule [950m](Baglung) in 1999. There was a significant difference due to mulching in marketable and unmarketable yield at Yampaphant while mulching showed significant effect only on unmarketable yield at Rising Patan in 1996. Use of straw mulching on tomato field had significant effect on reducing TYLCV disease incidence at Yampaphant in 1997. A tomato genotype set received from AVRDC was also screened against TYLCV in the same season of 1996, 1997 and 1999 at Yampaphant. During first two years, horticultural and other disease parameters were considered. Varietal screening of tomato against TYLCV was carried out in 1999. From visual rating of TYLCV, varieties ATY 3, ATY 5, and ATY 6 were resistant to TYLCV with also moderately resistant to Septoria leaf spot disease where as commercial varieties, NCL1, BL410 and Pusa ruby showed moderate level of TYLCV incidence. Whitefly, the vector of the virus, was monitored using yellow sticky trap during the tomato growing season in 1996 and 1999. The vector population reached the peak during second to third week of August which subsided with no population in second to last week of December.
