The use of rotenone against the olive fruit fly Bacrocera oleae under organic farming

To investigate the insecticidal activity and the residual action of the naturally derived toxin Rotenone against the olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleaw, laboratory and field trials were performed. Adult mortality as well as the mortality of preimaginal stages, caused by two concentrations of Rotenone were compared with the effect of the most common insecticide used today for B. oleae control. The results were rather satisfactory concerning the higher concentration, although that dose of ROtenone exhibited a strong repellent effect on the adult population. The use of Rotenone in combination with other biological methods in an organic farming trial, managed to keep the insect population at levels signficantly lower than those obtained by the conventional insecticide applications.
