Pietrain pigs consumed daily 0.33 kg less feed, grew 195 g slower, and utilized feed by 0.2 kg worse as compared to their counterparts from synthetic line. On the other hand, they contained 17 g more protein and water but 38 g less fat in the 1 kg of empty body. However, protein content in the diet did not changes these difference between genotypes. Protein and energy utilization was respectively 8.5 (P0.05) and 1.1 percent percentage units better in pigs receiving diets with 15.1 than 18 percent of crude protein. Moreover, the pigs receiving less protein gained insignificantly more by 33 g per day and in the body deposited 8 g per day more protein. Possible explanations of such responses of pigs fed the lower protein diet are discussed
