Photosynthetic and anatomical characteristics of flag and penultimate leaves of wheat genotypes [Triticum]

Although the correlation between leaf photosynthesis and wheat yield is not always a positive one, genetic variability of plant photosynthesis under field conditions is one factor that may identify genotypes with higher yield potential. The aim of this work was to study the effects of genotype on the photosynthetic capacity and leaf structure of the two youngest leaves during the anthesis and grain filling. A significant positive correlation (P0.05) between the percentage of mesophyll to leaf blade volume and the net photosynthetic rate was observed. There was no significant correlation between photosynthesis per leaf area unit and grain yield, while a significant correlation was found between the photosynthetic capacity (expressed as a function of net photosynthetic rate and an average photosynthetically active area during postanthesis period) and the yield. Thus, the duration of photosynthesis after anthesis appeared to be one of the grain yield determinants

[Sebbene la correlazione fra la fotosintesi fogliare e la resa produttiva del frumento non risulti sempre positiva, la variabilita' genetica della fotosintesi della pianta in condizioni di campo e' un fattore che puo' contribuire a identificare genotipi con potenzialita' produttiva piu' elevata. Lo scopo di questo lavoro consisteva nello studio degli effetti del genotipo sulla capacita' fotosintetica e la struttura delle due foglie piu' giovani durante l'antesi e il riempimento della granella. E' stata osservata una correlazione positiva significativa (P0,05) fra la percentuale del mesofillo rispetto al volume della lamina fogliare e il livello di fotosintesi netta. Non si riscontrava correlazione significativa fra fotosintesi per area unitaria della foglia e produzione di granella, mentre si e' riscontrata una correlazione significativa fra la capacita' fotosintetica (espressa come funzione del livello di fotosintesi netta e di un'area media fotosinteticamente attiva durante il periodo post-antesi) e la resa. Cosi', la durata della fotosintesi dopo l'antesi risultava uno dei determinanti della produzione di granella]
