Measurement of efficiency of agricultural cooperatives in Beja, Tunisia
1998
Ammar, M
The last decade has been a turbulent time for agricultural cooperatives in Tunisia as they have continued to show economic inefficiency. For this and other reasons, the Tunisian government embarked upon a privatisation program of the agricultural cooperatives in Tunisia starting in 1992. This research studies application of data envelopment analysis DEA to 16 agricultural cooperatives in the Governorate of Beja, Tunisia, in order to evaluate and plan economic efficiency. DEA Input oriented IO and DEA Output Oriented OO models were integrated to examine the effect of the model orientation. This non parametric method DEA, can be used to provide information about relative economic ratios of the 16 cooperatives, identify sources, estimate amounts of inefficiencies in each cooperative's performance and analyse returns to scale possibilities.
