Economical consideration for the evaluation of water consumption [olive tree - grapevine - wheat - tomato - Apulia]

A number of preliminary studies on an irrigation scheme of the Tavoliere delle Puglie showed an important difference between the water requirements of some crops (olive, vineyard, vegetable and wheat), computed with appropriate methodologies and the volume effectively supplied by farmers. The comparison, based on field data recorded form 1991 up to date, showed that farmers utilize water volumes considerably lower than the estimated ones. In order to understand the reasons leading the users to behave in this way, in the present study some economical parameters (i.e.: price of the water, variable according to the supplied class of volume, fixed costs of production, variable costs of production) have been identified. The yield response of crops to water has been estimated, crop by crop, on the base of field investigations on different samples of farmers. The water volume effectively supplied has been recorded on the flow meter used by each farmer, while the crop yields have been obtained by interview. In the present preliminary study, the elaboration is referred to the irrigation season 1991, year in which farmers operated on-demand. A mathematical model has been formulated, aiming at computing the optimal water volume to be supplied to the crops and the optimal area to be cultivated by each crop. The results of the model have been compared with the recorded water volumes and areas. They show that, effectively, farmers in the examined irrigation scheme use water in a sound way

Una serie di studi preliminari effettuati su un comprensorio irriguo dei Tavoliere delle Puglie ha messo in evidenza una notevole differenza fra i fabbisogni irrigui di alcune colture (olivo, vite, ortive e grano), stimati con metodologie appropriata, ed i volumi che gli agricoltori effettivamente ad esse somministrano. Il confronto, effettuato sulla base di dati rilevati in campo dal 1991 ad oggi, ha mostrato che gli agricoltori utilizzano volumi sensibilmente inferiori rispetto a quelli stimati. Al fine di comprendere i motivi che inducono gli utenti a questo comportamento, nel presente lavoro sono stati individuati alcuni parametri economici (per es.: il prezzo dell'acqua, variabile per classi di volumi somministrati, i costi di produzione fissi, i costi di produzione variabili) che possono realmente condizionare gli agricoltori nei prelievi idrici. La risposta produttiva delle colture in funzione dei volumi di acqua somministrati e' stata stimata, per ciascuna coltura, sulla base di indagini di campo effettuate su differenti campioni di agricoltori. Il volume di acqua effettivamente somministrato e' stato letto sul contatore utilizzato da ciascun utente, mentre le produzioni sono state ricavate mediante intervista agli stessi. Nel presente studio preliminare, tutte le elaborazioni riportate si riferiscono all'anno 1991, anno in cui gli agricoltori hanno irrigato a domanda. E' stato poi formulato un modello che consente di calcolare sia il volume irriguo ottimale da somministrare alle colture nel rispetto di alcuni vincoli fissati, sia la ripartizione ottimale delle superfici fra le varie colture erbacee. Il volume idrico e le superfici cosi' calcolate sono state confrontate con i volumi registrati e con le superfici effettivamente coltivate.
