Non destructive methods for the identification of Norway spruce trees with indented rings

The technical and commercial value attributed by violin makers to the wood of Norway spruce with indented rings makes it desirable the development of appropriate non-destructive methods for the identification of living trees carrying this peculiar anatomical feature. This paper presents an innovative easy methods, based on the search of indentations printed by the cambium on the bark of the stem. These so called bark indentations have been actually found, and the best procedure for their detection is the splitting of small bark plaques through the use of a small steel tool (e.g. a flat-nose screwdriver). The method causes substantially no damage to the tree, because it is not necessary to incise the cambium or the wood; this also allows the extension of the search along the stem, hence making it possible to verify the presence of wood with indented rings also when this feature is not intense or is discontinuously distributed

Il pregio riconosciuto dal mercato liutario al legname di abete rosso cosiddetto di risonanza rende desiderabile lo sviluppo di metodi non distruttivi idonei al riconoscimento in bosco degli individui portatori di questa particolare anomalia anatomica. Il presente lavoro descrive una metodologia innovativa, estremamente semplice, basata sulla ricerca delle tracce delle introflessioni anulari del legno stampate dal cambio nella corteccia del fusto. Queste tracce, denominate dagli AA indentature corticali, sono state effettivamente identificate ed il metodo migliore per evidenziarle e' risultato quello di provocare il distacco di placchette di corteccia mediante un'azione di leva effettuata con un piccolo utensile di acciaio a testa piatta (per esempio, un cacciavite). I danni alla pianta sono praticamente inesistenti, non giungendo mai ad intaccare il cambio o il legno; cio' consente di estendere a piacere lungo il fusto la ricerca delle indentature corticali, cosicche' (a differenza di altri metodi basati sulla scortecciatura localizzata oppure su carotature) risulta possibile riscontrare la presenza di legno di risonanza anche in alberi in cui questo carattere si presenta di debole intensita', oppure a chiazze
