Effects of the size and the temperature on the voluntary feed intake of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.)

[Seven hundred and twenty seven European sea bass were divided into 5 weight classes (65, 100, 140, 170 and 235 g), distributed among 24 tanks and subjected to 7 different water temperatures: 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28 and 31 deg C. For every temperature cycle, after an adaptation phase, voluntary feed intake was measured for 5 consecutive days. Only a type of feed (extruded, 3 mm diameter, 43.7% N x 6,25, 25.6% fat) was utilised during the whole trial. Voluntary intake of sea bass (% average live weight of tank) was positively related to water temperature (r = 0.96; P0.001) and photoperiod (r
