An assessment of the economic efficiency of a soil heating system under the crowns in each raised bed for off-season asparagus production
1999
Agraja, L.
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the financial effectiveness of the soil heating system under the crowns in every raised bed (UCR) for asparagus production in an unheated greenhouse, and to estimate the expected net revenues from the adoption of this technique in the area of Northern Greece. Experimental data from the Agricultural Research Center of Northern Greece were collected and analysed. As a means of comparison, three other production systems were employed: the soil heating system on the top of the raised bed (TOR), the soil heating system on the sides of the raised bed (SOR) and the traditional production system (TPS) in an unheated greenhouse. Several approaches to project appraisal, such as net present value, internal rate of return, benefit/cost ratio, payback period and discounted payback period, were employed. Also a NPV model adjusted to inflation was used. A combination of partial budgeting and sensitivity analysis was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the system
