[Four AFLP primer combinations were utilised for the analysis of genetic variability occurring in 116 genotypes belonging to three Italian cattle breeds of different origin (Italian Friesian, Italian Brown, Maremmana). 316 AFLP loci and 111 polymorphic bands were utilised as markers. On average, the genetic similarity within breed (0.620 +- 0.056) resulted higher than the observed similarity between breeds (0.431 +- 0.091), but individual values largely overlapped (range within breed = 0.431-0.931; range between breeds = 0.265-0.727). The 88% of observed genetic variability has been conserved within breed. The analysis of principal co-ordinates has separated three distinct groups corresponding to the breeds]

Quattro combinazioni di primer AFLP sono state utilizzate per studiare la variabilita' genetica presente in 116 genotipi appartenenti a tre razze bovine italiane di diversa origine (Frisona, Bruna, Maremmana). Sono stati studiati 316 loci AFLP e 111 bande polimorfiche sono state utilizzate come marcatori. In media la similarita' genetica entro razza (0,620 +- 0,056) e' risultata piu' elevata di quella osservata tra le razze (0,431 +- 0,091), ma i singoli valori hanno mostrato una notevole sovrapposizione (range entro razza = 0,431-0,931; range tra razze = 0,265-0,727). L'88% della variabilita' genetica osservata e' conservata entro razza. L'analisi delle coordinate principali ha suddiviso i soggetti in gruppi corrispondenti alle razze di appartenenza
