Surface flavonoids and essential oil compounds in Ocimum, Labiatae: their economic and ecological importance and relevance in determining infrageneric taxonomic relationships

Five of Ocimum growing wild in Kenya and an unidentified Ocimum species (O.x) were analysed for their essential oil and surface content. A. Lippia (Verbenaceae) species was also included in the investigation for comparison. The following essential oil chemotypes were found: O. americanum - linalool; O. basilicum - methyl chavicol; O. gratissimum - (Z)-b-ocimene/eugenol/methyl eugenol; O. kenyense - 1,8-cineole/chavicol/methyl chavicol, O. kilimandscharicum -camphor; O.x -sabinene, and Lippia - myrcenone. In each species, several compounds not reported before in literature were found. About 15 compounds not reported before in the genus Ocimum were found. The proportion (in percentage) of essential oil constituents including the main compound were affected by a number of factors, including the plant part, the method of analysis, age of the plant, greenhouse or direct-sun-grown and quantity of material used
