Variation in the volatile composition of Origanum microphyllum (Bentham) vogel (Lamiaceae) - a Cretan endemic species

Leaf samples from 77 different plants of O. microphyllum which were grown in the wild in five natural populations in Crete were collected. Woody cuttings were also taken for the vegetative propagation of the plants and for cultivation in pots under uniform environmental conditions. The headspace-GC analysis of the dried leaf samples indicated that three major monoterpenoids characterized the volatile fraction of the taxon: cis-sabinene hydrate, ranging from 3 to 68 percent sabinene, ranging from 3 to 45 percent, and trans-sabinene hydrate, ranging between 0.5 and 34 percent, all thujane-type monoterpenoids. The great variability in the levels of all three major components reflected high heterogeneity within natural populations. Four chemical profiles were identified. The particular profile identity of each sample remained unchanged when the same plants ere cultivated in homogeneous conditions and examined a year later
