Development and state of the Chinese forest resources
2001
Qinghuan, S. | Shifeng, D.
Due to the rapid population growth in China, an increasing deterioration in ecological conditions has been determined. The overuse of the forests is the cause of destructive erosion and the destabilized water balance. Additionally, the cleft between timber supply and demand is steadily widening. This conflict is intensified by the fact that large, valuable forest complexes are being protected. By expanding the timber import, p. e. from Germany and other countries, China is trying to improve the situation. Furthermore, large afforestation projects are to be launched in many regions to combat the increasing timber shortage, including that of abroad.
