During 1999-00, quality, nutritive value and nutrient digestibility were assessed in herbage harvested from semi-natural grassland and grass/lucerne mixture and pressed into big round bales at different dry matter content. The content of DM showed the most notable effects on the quality, nutrient digestibility and nutritive value of silage. Nutrient digestibility and nutritive values of wilted silage were decreasing with increasing DM content. The lowest coefficients of digestibility were recorded in grass/lucerne mixture silage preserved at DM content of 610.07 g/kg. The highest digestibility and energy value were found in the bales of semi-natural grassland herbage preserved at 351.81 g/kg DM content. The highest PDIE and PDIN paramaters were determined in the bales of grass/lucerne mixture herbage with low DM content
