A surveillance programme for Salmonella infection in poultry. First results [Romagna]

A programme monitoring prevalence and risk factors of Salmonella infection in poultry was conducted by veterinary services of Romagna region. 125 egg production farms (corresponding to a total of 254 flocks of hens, pullets layer one day old chickens) were examined over a period of two months (from March 1999 to April 1999). Salmonella were isolated from 15.2% of monitored farms and from 9.4% of monitored flocks. Salmonella enteritidis was the most common serovar isolated (66.7%). Anamnestic data were studied to emphasise possible correlations with Salmonella enteritidis infection. Geographical location of the farm, distance from other farms, number of producing units/farm, number of birds/farm, water supply, type of management (floor pens or batteries) and Salmonella vaccination programmes were correlated to Salmonella enteritidis infection. The development of a more detailed monitoring programme to study risk factors of Salmonella infection in egg production farms is recommended
