إنجليزي. The age of the trees is a subject between the science and the popular belief. The trees are the oldest living things in the earth and there is ever increasing awareness among the general public and managers of the ecological, scientific, cultural and aesthetic values of old trees. Dendrochronologists especially can appreciate the invaluable scientific resources contained in old trees for archeology, dendroclimatology and, more in general, dendroecology. However, an essential question can arise when defining "old" for a given tree or species: exactly what is the true age? In which way the age has been calculated or estimated? Methods and problems in living trees age determination are discussed and the lists of the oldest trees, in general and in the Italian peninsula, are presented

Le eta' degli alberi sono un argomento il cui interesse non e' ristretto al solo settore forestale o agli ambiti naturalistici, ma e' parte della cultura e dell'immaginario collettivo. Gli alberi sono i piu' vecchi esseri viventi conosciuti e vi e' un crescente interesse culturale e scientifico per le numerose informazioni che sono immagazzinate in queste "banche dati biologiche". Proprio per questo ampio interesse, tradizionale e pluridisciplinare, nella valutazione dell'eta' degli alberi gli aspetti legati al mito ed alla leggenda spesso prevalgono rispetto all'uso corretto dei metodi scientifici. La valutazione dell'eta' di un albero richiede la rigorosa applicazione di tecniche dendrocronologiche; in questo lavoro sono descritti i metodi e i problemi legati alla corretta valutazione dell'eta' degli alberi e sono presentati gli elenchi delle specie forestali piu' longeve nel mondo ed in Italia
