This work is focused on some important aspects of irrigation management with a special reference to the selection of the most appropriate irrigation methods and scheduling practices under salinity conditions. Irrigation scheduling practices are analyzed through the soil water balance approach considering crop evapotranspiration, irrigation water supply, leaching requirements, timing of irrigation and leaching, and role of drainage systems in water management under salinity conditions. Moreover, the yield-salinity relationship and combined salinity-evapotranspiration relationship are presented. The performances of different irrigation methods are discussed concerning both the use of saline water for irrigation and the leaching of salty soils. The strategies to avoid negative effects of saline water use in agriculture are outlined indicating the best management practices for different irrigation methods.
