Influence of rootstocks on the vegetative development of apple cv Annurca [Malus pumila L. - Latium]

إنجليزي. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of four different apple rootstocks on the physiological and vegetative performance of the apple cv Annurca. The following genotypes of apple were used as rootstocks: Jork 9, MM 106, M 26 and Schrama self-rooted, self-grafted and grafted with cv Annurca. Several biometrical and physiological parameters were measured for the evaluation of their affinity. The evaluation of the physiological efficiency of the grafted plants consisted on the assessment of the gas exchange capacity in relation to photosynthesis and transpiration. The vegetative response of cv Annurca in different grafting combinations was influenced by the rootstock. No significant differences were observed among investigated combinations in relation to the rate of photosynthesis. Although the rootstock is not capable of modifying the rate of net photosynthesis of the graft, it can modify the efficiency of the plant by modifying the leaf apparatus. Botanical histological assessment of the graft union demonstrated sufficient anatomical affinity between the cv Annurca and the rootstocks Jork 9, MM 106 and M 26. These combinations have been classified in categories A and B, while the combination Annurca/Schrama in category D. However, the grafting point of Annurca/Schrama combination caused distortions of the wood and cortical discontinuity of the new plant
