This study on bud load effect follows a previous research aimed to the characterization of the viticultural zone of Ascoli Piceno province. Ascoli vine growing area is characterized by four microclimates, clearly distinguishable, identified with the localities: Magliano, Fermo, Ripatransone, and Carassai. .Grapevine varieties cultivated in these areas, in particular Trebbiano toscano, Sangiovese and Montepulciano, showed different productive and qualitative performance in function of the pruning intensity (8, 16, or 24 buds/vine)and cultivation site. The number of buds retained at pruning interacts with environmental factors and this combined effect influence the vegetative and productive level of vines. Sangiovese is more affected by this interaction than Trebbiano and Montepulciano. In general the lowest and the highest bud load give inferior must quality and profitability, while with the intermediate bud load, 16 buds/vine, vines show an equilibrated production and quality level, less influenced by climatic parameters (temperature and rainfall). Ripatransone and Carassai are the most productive, and in Carassai the highest quality is reached pruning the vines at 8 buds. Magliano area, is not suitable for cultivars, with a medium-late late cycle. Fermo, although characterized by a limited water availability that suggests the utility to provide for some irrigation, is considered an interesting site for the cultivation of red grapevines, limiting the bud load at a maximum of 16 buds/vines
