Behaviour of lactating sows and litters in relation to the feeding system of the sows

The behavioural effects of a feeding system expected to lower the nutritional deficiency of the lactating sow were studied on 22 Large White multiparous sows in farrowing crates and on their offspring. Eleven sows (group A) were fed twice a day; the remaining 11 sows (group B) received the same liquid feed continuously from 6:00 h to 23:00 h. Sows of group B showed a higher feed intake (7.45 vs 5.39 kg/head/day; P0.0001) and a lower body weight loss during lactation; although in litters deriving from sows B the mortality incidence was lowered (mainly due to a reduction of crushing: 4.5 vs 7.6%), the average weight of piglets at weaning was higher. Sows of group A were less quiet (vocalising 10.9 vs 6.2%; P0.04), while sows B spent more time in standing, particularly at the feeder (P0.005), engaged in eating. Sows A showed a greater incidence of stereotypic behaviours, as sham chewing (P0.02). The present experiment suggests that the increase of maternal feed intake by means of suitable feeding systems can improve both the productive response and the behavioural pattern of sows and piglets

[Sono stati studiati gli effetti sul comportamento di un sistema di alimentazione ritenuto in grado di ridurre la carenza nutrizionale della scrofa in lattazione su 22 scrofe multipare di razza Large White in gabbie da parto e sulla prole delle stesse. Undici scrofe (gruppo A) erano alimentate due volte al giorno; le altre 11 scrofe (gruppo B) ricevevano lo stesso alimento liquido continuamente dalle ore 6,00 alle 23,00. Le scrofe del gruppo B presentavano una maggiore ingestione di alimento (7,45 vs 5,39 kg/capo/g; P0,0001) e una minore perdita di peso corporeo durante la lattazione; sebbene nelle nidiate derivanti dalle scrofe del gruppo B la mortalita' fosse diminuita (soprattutto per la riduzione dello schiacciamento: 4,5 vs 7,6%), il peso medio dei suinetti allo svezzamento era piu' elevato. Le scrofe del gruppo A erano meno calme (vocalizzazione 10,9 vs 6,2%; P0,04), mentre le scrofe del gruppo B passavano piu' tempo in stazione eretta, particolarmente all'alimentatore (P0,005), impegnate ad alimentarsi. Le scrofe A presentavano una maggiore incidenza di stereotipie, come finta masticazione (P0,02). Il presente esperimento fa ritenere che l'aumento dell'ingestione materna di alimento per mezzo di sistemi di alimentazione adatti possa migliorare tanto la risposta produttiva quanto il comportamento delle scrofe e dei suinetti]
