[Characterization of morphological and productive diversity of a collection of Pleurotus eryngii isolates [Apulia - Sardinia - Sicily]]

The evaluation of phenotypic variation of P. eryngii var. eryngii, P. eryngii var. ferulae and P. eryngii var. nebrodensis germplasm is a prerequisite to correctly distinguish groups for traits of interest and to identify strains with high yield potential. In this study, a population of 142 strains, belonging to the above varieties and with different Italian geographic origins, was studied for quantitative (shape, size and yield) and qualitative (color, malformations and growing behaviour) traits. An experimental design, with three blocks and three replicates for each strain within block, was used to calculate more precisely trait estimates. Data were recorded at three carpophore harvests. Highly significant differences for quantitative morphological traits were observed among strains for number and weight of sporocarps, whereas no significant differentiation was noticed among geographic origins and taxonomic groups. A certain degree of differentiation for geographic origin and taxonomic group was only observed for qualitative traits with Sardinian and nebrodensis types respectively. Some non commercial strains of this collection performed better than the commercial ones. On average, yield per strain (basidiocarp weight) was more correlated with number of fruit bodies than with their size. The most stable traits across replicates were those which compose yield, i. e. basidiocarp number and weight per strain. It follows that such traits can be used for an efficient genetic selection of the best yielding strains
