Effect of scrotal circumference and body weight on reproductive performance of young dairy bulls [Italy]

Three hundred nineteen pedigree selected Holstein bulls, entering progeny test sampling programs in four different Italian studs, were used to investigate the influence of scrotal circumference and body weight on reproductive performance. Number of mounts necessary to collect 1,200 doses of semen, age at the first usable semen dose and the age at the 1,200th semen dose were the analysed traits. GLM procedure showed that bulls with greater scrotal circumference needed fewer mounts to collect 1,200 doses and attained both first and 1,200th usable semen doses at earlier ages. Significant differences existed among the 4 AI studs, suggesting that control of management and physiological aspects could help diminishing the length of the progeny testing period
