Protein content of Triticum spelta L. species. Comparison with one population of T. dicoccum Schuebler - two species of durum wheat - and one variety of triticale [Molise]

A three-year trial 1996-1999 has been performed in a high hill environment of the Molise region (Southern Italy), in the framework of the EU Project "Spelt, a recovered crop for the future European sustainable agriculture - SESA, Sub-project: Adaptability". Aim of the trial was the evaluation, in low input conditions, of the performance of the following genotypes: no. 13 hulled wheats (12 varieties of T. spelta and 1 local population of emmer, T. dicoccum), 2 durum wheat varieties and 1 triticale. The protein content of kernels and the protein crude content of spikelets of the hulled wheats have been determined as qualitative trait. For what concerns the protein content (DM) of the spkelets, the three-year averages of the spelta varieties varied between 12.3 and 13.8%, while was 12.4% for the emmer population. The protein content in the grain recorded values from 15.3 to 17.7% for the group of spelta varieties, 14.6% for the emmer, about 13% for the durum wheat varieties, 12.2% for triticale. A high negative correlation between protein content and grain yield was shown for both the group of spelta varieties and as general relation. The amount of recovered N with the hulled product was slightly more or equal to 100% only for the highest yielding spelta varieties. On the contrary, for the emmer population, the recovered N resulted rather higher than the amount supplied

Una sperimentazione triennale 1996-1999, condotta in ambiente delle aree interne del Molise ed impostata su base low input, ha messo a confronto 13 frumenti vestiti (12 varieta' di Triticum spelta ed 1 popolazione di T. dicoccum), 2 varieta' di frumento duro e 1 varieta' di triticale, per valutarne comparativamente comportamento e capacita' produttiva. Come caratteristica qualitativa dei prodotti e' stato determinato il tenore di proteina della granella e, per i frumenti vestiti, anche quello delle spighette. Quanto al tenore proteico delle varieta' di spelta, i valori medi nel triennio (proteina grezza su SS) hanno variato tra il 15,3 ed il 17,7% per la granella, tra il 12,3 ed 13,8% per le spighette. La popolazione di dicocco ha fatto registrare valori inferiori, 14,6% per la granella e 12,4% per le spighette. Il tenore proteico della granella dei due frumenti e' risultato nell'ordine del 13%, lievemente superiore a quello del triticale (12,2%). Sia entro il gruppo degli spelta, sia come relazione generale, il rapporto tra tenori proteici e quantita' di prodotto e' risultato caratterizzato da un elevato coefficiente di correlazione di segno negativo. Calcolata sul prodotto vestito degli spelta, la recovery dell'azoto somministrato e' stata pari o di poco superiore al 100% solo per le varieta' piu' produttive.
