[Characterization of the unsaturated zone of an old-growth Laurisilva forest in the Garajonay National Park [Canary Islands, Spain]: hydrophobicity and hydrological implications] | Caracterización de la zona no saturada de un bosque maduro de Laurisilva en el Parque Nacional de Garajonay: hidrofobicidad e implicaciones hidrológicas

إنجليزي. Characterization of the vadose zone of a laurisilva mature mountain forest in the Garajonay National Park: Hydrophobicity and hydrological consequences. Soil water repellency may affect hydrological properties in the unsaturated zone, diminishing infiltration capacity and increasing runoff and water loss due to evaporation. The current study determines the persistency and the degree of hydrophobicity in highly organic volcanic soils from a forest watershed located in the Garajonay National Park. Both, the water droplet penetration time (WDPT) and the molarity of ethanol droplet (MED) tests have been applied at different soil water contents (theta g/g). Thus, differences in time infiltration (ti) and contact angle (alpha sub(l-s)) are obtained. A non-monotonic hydrophobic behaviour is observed, whereby hydrophobicity initially increases up to a maximum and then decreases as theta diminishes. Two empirical models are proposed that fit the ti-theta and alpha sub(l-s)-theta data sets, thus allowing us to quantify such a hydrophobic behaviour by fitted shape parameters. Moisture characteristic measurements indicate that soils are repellent within the range of water content available to plants. Possible correlations between water repellency shape parameters and organic matter content are investigated. Finally, potential risk erosion of the watershed soils is evaluated.

La hidrofobicidad de los suelos puede afectar a las propiedades hidrológicas de la zona no saturada, reduciendo la capacidad de infiltración y aumentando la escorrentía y las pérdidas de humedad debido a procesos de evaporación. El presente estudio determina la persistencia y el grado de hidrofobicidad de suelos volcánicos altamente orgánicos procedentes de una cuenca hidrológica situada en el Parque Nacional de Garajonay (La Gomera). La metodología seguida hace uso del método del tiempo de infiltración de la gota de agua (WDPT) y del método de la molaridad de la gota de etanol (MED), aplicados a muestras de suelo a diferentes contenidos de humedad (teta g/g). Se obtienen así la variación del tiempo de persistencia a la hidrofobicidad (ti) y el ángulo de repelencia (alfa sub(l-s)) en función de teta. Se observa un comportamiento hidrófobo no monotónico en el que la repelencia al agua aumenta inicialmente hasta un valor máximo y decrece posteriormente a medida que disminuye. Se proponen dos modelos empíricos a los que se ajustan el conjunto de datos ti-teta y alfa sub(1-s)-teta , permitiendo así cuantificar dicho comportamiento mediante parámetros de forma. Medidas de la capacidad de retención de humedad demuestran que los suelos son hidrófobos en el intervalo de agua útil para las plantas. Se estudian igualmente posibles correlaciones entre parámetros de forma que describen distintos aspectos de la hidrofobicidad de estos suelos y el contenido en materia orgánica. La importancia de la hidrofobicidad se evalúa en términos de riesgo de erosión potencial de los suelos de la cuenca.
