Efficacy of insecticides for the control of Linepithema humile (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Sicilian citrus orchards [Citrus limon (L.) Burm. F.]

إنجليزي. In 1997, in trees about 3 m high and with stem diameter ranging from 20 to 30 cm, in 1999, with stem diameter ranging from 15 to 25 cm and in 2001, with stem diameter ranging from 30 to 40 cm, we carried out three trials to assess insecticide efficacy on argentine ant. Trees were heavily infested with a variety of honeydew producing Homoptera and the Argentine ants made trails, from their nest in the ground, up the trunks to the vicinities of the insects they were tending. In 1997, boric acid (0.5%) plus sugar (25%) and chlorpyrifos were compared. In 1999 trial, boric acid (0.5%) plus sugar and hexane sticky material trunk paint were compared. In 2001 trial, we compared boric acid (0.25%) baits with both chemical compounds. No significant effect was recorded for boric acid sugar bait application. Only chlorpyrifos and hexane sticky material achieved good efficacy on argentine ant and reduced statistically ant movements on the trunk
