Contribution of the Italian research to the brackish water use for the irrigation of the vegetable crops in Italy

The growing problem of the water-table salinization in many Italian vegetable coastal areas enhanced progressively the interest of the research to find solutions for the sustainable use of brackish water to irrigate vegetable crops. In the last fifty years, besides many physiological and biochemical researches, related to the salinity response of many species, that is the basis for more applicative studies and for genetic improvement, researches were carried out to estimate salt tolerance of many crops, providing a remarkable contribution to increase the number of vegetable species classified by Maas and Hoffman (1977) according to the salt tolerance parameters values (threshold and slope). The phenological stages more salt sensitive were identified for many vegetable species; moreover, the interactions between the salinity response of crops and the agronomical and environmental parameters and, more recently, salinity effects on product quality were studied. This findings, together with International literature data, made possible the formulation and the divulgation of protocols for the correct use of brackish waters to irrigate vegetable crops

Il problema crescente della salinizzazione delle falde in molte aree costiere italiane a vocazione orticola ha accresciuto sempre piu' l'interesse della ricerca a cercare soluzioni per l'impiego sostenibile di tali acque a scopo irriguo. Nell'ultimo cinquantennio, in Italia sono state compiute ricerche miranti a valutare il grado di tolleranza alla salinita' di un gran numero di specie orticole, contribuendo ad aumentare il numero di specie caratterizzate per il loro comportamento alla salinita' gia' elencate da Maas e Hoffman (1977). Per molte specie sono state individuate le fasi fenologiche piu' sensibili; sono state studiate, inoltre, le interazioni tra risposta alla salinita' delle colture e fattori ambientali ed agronomici e, piu' recentemente, gli effetti della salinita' sulla qualita' dei prodotti. Cio' ha contribuito, insieme ai dati derivanti dalla letteratura internazionale, alla messa a punto e alla divulgazione di protocolli per il corretto utilizzo delle acque salmastre a scopo irriguo in orticoltura
