In the early Summer 2001 and 2002, in a domestic orchard located in the Canavese (North-West of Piedmont, Italy), an unusual disease was observed on apple leaves. The disease causes on the upper leaf side irregular spots, often confluent, similar to a darken network with margins somewhat dendritic, brownish and becoming black with the time, and, on under leaf side, lesions smaller and with more definite margins. The heavily infected leaves became chlorotic and prematurely fall. Scattered acervuli, bearing conidia typical of the genus Marssonina, broke out from the diseased tissues. The fungus was isolated, grown on apple-leaf agar and inoculated, as conidia suspended in water, on the leaves of Golden Delicious apple shoots. Disease symptoms were reproduced and the pathogen reisolated. The fungus was identified as Marssonina coronaria (Ell. et J.J. Davis) J.J. Davis, teleomorph Diplocarpon mali Harada et al., the causal agent of the disease known as apple leaf blotch or apple leaf spot. The disease has not been reported in Western Europe
