Tanaman tebu sangat potensia! untuk terus dikembangkan untuk menghasilkan berbagai produk-produk agroindustri untuk memenuhi kebutuhan masyarakat. Selain gula pasir, dari tanaman tebu masih terdapat sejumlah produk agroindustri lain yang masih terbuka untuk dikembangkan, salah satunya adalah gula rnerah tebu. Agroindustri gula merah tebu bisa dijadikan alternatif untuk meningkatkan kesejahteraan masyarakat di pedesaan yang sekaligus dapat diandalkan untuk mengembangkan potensi daerah dan mengurangi laju urbanisasi. Hal tersebut sangat memungkinkan karena proses produksi gula merah dari tanaman tebu dapat dilakukan dalam lingkup usaha mikro dan kecil dengan peralatan dan perlengkapan produksi yang mudah diperoleh. Ditinjau dari aspek taisnis, gula merah tebu cukup menjanjikan mengingat kebutuhan akan gula merah tebu yang masih luas untuk kebutuhan berbagai industri, seperti industri kecap, jamu, makanan, dan kebutuhan rumah tangga. Selain itu, ditinjau dari rantai pasok (supply chain) pengembangan agroindustri gula merah tebu akan memacu kegiatan ekonomi di pedesaan baik ke arah hulu berupa kegiatan penyediaan bahan baku dan kebutuhan produksi lainnya maupun ke hilir berupa kegiatan pemasaran dan produksi produk-produk agroindustri lainnya.

Sugar cane is one of the perennial crops that are prospective to be developed further to produce a variety of agroindustrial products to fulfill the needs of the society. Basically, there are more than 50 types of agroindustrial products that can be derived from sugar cane other than sugar. One of the products is brown sugar of the sugar cane. This type of product can be viewed as opportunities to develop alternatives for improving economic activities in the society, especially the rural society so as to increase the attractiveness of the rural area for the people and to minimize urbanization. This conjecture is based on the fact that technologically brown sugar can be processed in the simple and affordable manner so that it gives chances to the micro and small scale businesses to develop their production activities. From the business point of view, the development of brown sugar from sugar cane is profitable and beneficiary. Its market is still open especially for soya sauce industry, traditional medicines (jamu), foods, and other household needs. In addition, from the supply chain insight, the development of brown sugar can accelerate the rural economy, not only the upstream activities such as the procurement of raw materials, but also the downstream areas such as marketing activities and production lines of other agroindustrial products.
