The effect of copper and zinc ions on the degradation of natural rubber latex

Natural rubber latex were exposed to visible light in the presence of zinc and copper ions. The viscosity, gel content and absorption measurements did not show any change to the polyisoprene chain for latex containing zinc ion. However copper seems to induce photodegradation of the polyisoprene chain. The order of the molecular weight of rubber decreased from 10 to the power of 6 to 10 to the power of 5 gmol-1 and the gel content from about 47 percent to about 30 percent. The infrared spectrum of the rubber showed a small peak at 1720 cm-1 which correspond to the carbonyl absorption. These observations indicated that the role of zinc ion as a stabiliser while copper ion as a photodegradative agent. The photosensitising oxidation of rubber by copper ion will be discussed.
