The Tawau Hills Park, in the northern part ofTawau District in Semporna Peninsula, is underlain mainly by Miocene to Pleistocene andesitic, dacitic and basaltic volcanic rocks with subordinate Early Neogene sedimentary rocks of the Kalumpang Formation. The Andrassy and Magdalena mountains, made up of Miocene to Pliocene andesites, are the major topographicfeatures of the Tawau Hills Park. The dacite and basalt types erupted around 27,000 years ago and formed the youngest volcanic aprons which cover an extensive area overlying the older volcanics. They are important links in the long chain ofTertiary volcanics which extendfrom the southern part ofthe Philippines across the Sulu Archipelago to the southeastern part of Sabah, the Semporna Peninsula. The volcanic activity, including the extrusion of basaltic lava probably continued to the Recent time. The andesites and dacites which eruptedfrom volcanoes and which together with thosefrom otherparts ofthe peninsula also trendingE-W, parallel to the general morphologicfeature ofthepeninsula are related to the subduction trend of the Late Neogene. The hot springs in the Semporna Peninsula area are considered the remnants ofthe tectonic and thermal activities of the region.

Taman Bukit-Bukit Tawau, di bahagian utara Daerah Tawau di Semenanjung Semporna, terbena daripada kebanyakannya batuan volkanik Miosen hingga Pleistosen jenis andesit, dasit dan kebasaltan serta sedikit batuan enapan daripada Formasi Kalumpangyang berusia 27,000 tahun merupakan batuan volkanik termuda yang menutupi bahagian bertopografrendah di atas volkanik lebih tua. Mereka merupakan jalur persambunan utama volkanik Tertier yang memanjang dari bahagian selatan Filipina ke bahagian tenggara Sabah di Semenanjung Semporna melalui Kepulauan Sulu. Aktiviti volkanik termasuk ekstrusi lava kebasaltan mungkin berterusan hingga ke Resen. Batuan andesit dan dasit merupakan hasil letusan dari gunung berapi bersama-sama dengan batuan volkanik lain di sepanjang Semenanjung Semporna membentuk morfologi utama dan selari dengan orientasi semenanjung tersebut yang mengarah ti'murbarat dan berkait rapat dengan trend subduksi Neogene Lewat. Matair-matair panas di kawasan Semenanjung Semporna merupakan sisa-sisa peninggalan aktiviti-aktiviti tektonik dan terma di rantau ini.
